Sony introduced a set of motion trackers for virtual reality

3:08 pm, November 29, 2022

Japanese tech giant Sony has unveiled a new set of Mocopi motion trackers designed to interact with virtual reality. Bloomberg journalists found out that the new product will be available for purchase in January 2023.

Mocopi motion trackers are available for both Android and iOS. They consist of six so-called pucks that should be worn on the ankles, wrists, head, and hips. The trackers are designed to animate avatars in the Sony Metaverse app.

According to Sony, the Mocopi set will cost $ 360 and will be available in the tech giant’s official stores. The company also has a PlayStation VR headset designed for use with the PlayStation game console. The developers are also working on an updated version called PlayStation VR 2, which is scheduled for release in February 2023.

A few days ago, it became known about Sony’s new acquisition: the company bought Beyond Sports, whose developers created an algorithm for converting images of sporting events into 3D objects inside virtual reality. The project is estimated at about $ 70 million, and its goal is to create a technology that would allow the production of content related to football, basketball, tennis, and baseball competitions in real time.

As it has become known, Sony plans to combine the intellectual property of Beyond Sports and another company acquired in 2011, Hawk-Eye Innovations, which once invented a way to determine the position of a game ball at any time. If Sony succeeds, the tech giant will be able to recreate an accurate real-time simulation of a sporting event in 3D, with both players and the ball moving as realistically as possible.
