Hackers who attacked NATO’s website were able to briefly damage the aviation communications system

5:42 pm, February 14, 2023

Killnet hackers have disrupted communications between NATO and an airplane providing aid to victims of the Turkish-Syrian earthquake that killed more than 30,000 people. The pilot was warned of a failure in the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which is used, among other things, to transmit confidential information. According to the alliance, the failure was caused by yesterday’s DDoS attack on NATO websites.

Although contact with the plane was not lost, the hacker attack, according to the agency, did affect the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Killnet is a group of pro-Kremlin criminals who seek to disable military and government websites through cyberattacks. The hackers are targeting states that provide military assistance to Ukraine in a full-scale war with Russia. Hacks by Russian programmers usually do not cause significant long-term damage. However, Western intelligence agencies suggest that the terrorist state may be building up its cyber capabilities for a massive digital attack in the future.

As a reminder, Killnet tried to prevent the whistleblowing cyber activities of Anonymous hackers who attacked Russian websites and told the truth about the occupiers' atrocities in Ukraine. The criminals also blackmailed British doctors and threatened to turn off lung ventilators in hospitals. Shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian aggression on the territory of our country, Killnet published a video in which a hooded figure with a distorted voice called on Russians «not to flee the country, but to support the homeland.»
