ChatGPT’s popularity among cybercriminals increased by 625%

6:32 pm, March 6, 2023

According to NordVPN’s cybersecurity researchers, more and more cybercriminals are looking for ways to use ChatGPT in their activities. The number of new messages on darknet forums about ChatGPT has increased by 625%.

The study analyzed both the number of comments and the number of newly created topics. The use of artificial intelligence technologies in hacking has become the most popular topic on the darknet. The most frequently asked questions include:

  • how to make ChatGPT create malware;
  • how to hack ChatGPT;
  • how to use ChatGPT for cyberattacks.

According to experts, the chatbot’s ability to compose texts that are indistinguishable from human writing can potentially lead to phishing attacks. On forums, attackers are looking for ways to make ChatGPT conduct such attacks by overcoming the chatbot’s content restrictions.

In early February, we told you that cybersecurity experts from Check Point Research found out that hackers had developed a way to use ChatGPT to create malware and phishing emails. ChatGPT APIs allow you to create fraudulent software directly in Telegram.

ChatGPT APIs are open to developers so they can integrate AI into their programs, including Telegram channels. When communicating via the API with a chatbot, you can bypass specific restrictions and freely create malicious content. Obviously, this method will be blocked in the future, but for now, experts emphasized the active use of the ChatGPT API by hackers.
