The company that developed ChatGPT is already worth at least $ 30 billion

10:33 am, April 30, 2023

The valuation of the American company OpenAI, which created the ChatGPT chatbot, has approached $ 30 billion following the latest investment round of $ 300 million. TechCrunch reports this with reference to the company’s financial statements.

The list of investors includes Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Thrive, K2 Global, and Founders Fund. Following the investment round, the company still owns about 70% of the shares. According to the publication, American billionaire Peter Thiel is investing in the company for the second time, but through Founders Fund. For a16z and Tiger Global, this is also a repeat investment, but the size of their investments is not specified.

At the beginning of 2023, the American company Microsoft announced plans to allocate $ 10 billion over several years for the development of ChatGPT. According to media reports, Microsoft will receive 49% of the company’s shares as a result of the investment. It will also account for up to 75% of OpenAI’s revenue until the investment pays off.

Experts estimate that OpenAI will need more than 30,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs to run ChatGPT. At the same time, the new generation of chips — Nvidia H100 — is sold for $ 40,000 each. In April, it became known about Microsoft’s plans to release its own super-powerful chip with artificial intelligence (AI) for integration into chatbot systems such as ChatGPT. It is reported that the chip will be used to train and launch AI systems for Microsoft products and services. However, the timing of the chip’s release remains unknown, and its development has been underway since 2019.
