Cryptocurrency owner mistakenly sent $ 1.5 million in bitcoins to a stranger

9:17 am, May 12, 2023

A Discord user named «camper» posted a request on the platform to return $ 1.5 million in bitcoins — the man accidentally sent them to a person under the pseudonym «Jared from Subway.»

«Jared from Subway, if you’re reading this, please help. I mistakenly sent you cryptocurrency worth about $ 1.5 million. Is there any way I can get it back? Otherwise, my investors will kill me. Please help me, Jared! I want to live,» the man wrote.

While the situation was still in limbo, a Twitter user under the nickname 0xCuteSocks posted the story on his page. The anonymous person analyzed the situation in detail and also provided links to numerous transactions made by the bitcoin owner.

Twitter users were openly puzzled as to how a mistake could be made when transferring such a large amount of money, and in several stages. «How can you make several random transactions to the wrong address? You’re supposed to check everything after the first one,» wrote one user. «Imagine not making a test transaction before sending $ 1.5 million,» another ironized.

However, the story ended happily — Jared from Subway returned the funds to the cryptocurrency owner, keeping a «modest» $ 50,000.

This is not the first time in recent times that cryptocurrency holders have lost a lot of money due to mistakes or inattention. Earlier, we told you about a trader who paid a fee of 64 ETH (approximately $ 120,000 at the time) to transfer 84 WETH. However, just like the story above, this one also ended with a happy ending — the trader not only didn’t suffer any losses but also made a good profit.
