Developer finds a way to use game console to store cryptocurrencies
Joseph Schiarizzi, the developer of the cryptocurrency company Keyp, has presented a project that will allow the 8-bit portable gaming device Game Boy to be used as a cold wallet for storing cryptocurrency.
A few days ago, Schiarizzi presented a concept in which a physical Game Boy cartridge is used as a «truly self-contained hardware wallet.» «We are working on a physical cartridge that can be used for cold storage of cryptocurrency. It will also allow you to generate mnemonic phrases and store them securely off line,» said Schiarizzi.
The cartridge does not require any security updates. Keys will be generated by the user while playing RPGs and completing simple quests.
The author of the project is sure that Game Boy is an ideal device for storing cryptocurrency. First, the console does not connect to the Internet. Secondly, Game Boy was created before the advent of cryptocurrencies and cannot be attacked by digital phishing.
In late March 2021, a gaming blogger modified his Nintendo Game Boy for bitcoin mining. He connected the Game Boy to a computer using a Raspberry Pi Pico board via a port in the console. The Raspberry Pi Pico allowed him to create an adapter from a USB cable. However, the Nintendo Game Boy could only provide a hashrate of 0.8 EH/s.
