SSDs continued to fall rapidly in price: 1 GB can be obtained for as little as $ 0.04
Prices for SSDs continue to fall. In March, Tom’s Hardware noted that prices had fallen by 15−30% since January. And from March to June, the average price dropped by another 25% for 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB drives: the average cost per gigabyte is now just 6 cents in the US. And, according to analysts, this is not the limit.
The reason for the price drop is no secret. Demand for NAND flash memory, which is the basis for solid-state drives, has fallen dramatically. According to the TrendForce analytical group, the average price fell by 15% in the first quarter of 2023, and a further drop of 8−13% is expected in the second quarter. Meanwhile, manufacturers' revenues from sales of SSDs fell by 47.3% in the first quarter.
With demand for drives and memory in general declining, manufacturers are having to build up inventories in the hope of selling them at a higher price in a few quarters. If you’ve been planning to upgrade or build a new PC, now is the time to do so at the lowest cost, although the downward trend in prices may continue for a few weeks.
For example, prices for 1TB drives have dropped by up to 50% since March. The budget gaming WD Black SN770 with PCIe 4.0 NVMe interface can be purchased for just $ 50−60 in the US, or about 5 cents per gigabyte.
If there is a demand for faster devices, the bar will rise to 6−8 cents per gigabyte. The most productive Samsung 990 Pro disk cost $ 169 in March, and now its price is only $ 84.99.
In general, experts predict that the trend toward cheaper SSDs will continue at least until the end of the second quarter of 2023.
