The developer of the most popular artificial intelligence is under investigation in the US

4:44 pm, July 14, 2023

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT chatbot. The goal is to find out what data privacy rules the company applies to users. The agency also plans to find out what measures OpenAI takes to ensure that the company’s technology does not provide false information to users. This was reported by the Washington Post.

The antitrust regulator asked OpenAI to provide detailed information about its activities, including privacy rules, data security rules, processes, and artificial intelligence technology.

According to the FTC’s letter, published in the Washington Post, OpenAI is being investigated for engaging in «unfair or deceptive privacy or data security practices» or practices that harm users. The company’s founder, Sam Altman, said he would cooperate with law enforcement, but expressed disappointment that the case had been opened at all. Altman was also outraged by the way he learned about the precedent through leaking information to journalists.

In his tweet, the OpenAI founder said that this move «will not help build trust,» but added that the company would cooperate with the FTC. «It's very important to us that our technology is safe and consumer-centered, and we are confident that we are complying with the law,» he said. — «We protect user privacy and design our systems to learn about the world, not individuals,» OpenAI CEO said.

As a reminder, tech giant Google has been accused of stealing data from millions of users to train its artificial intelligence. The lawsuit was filed by the Clarkson law firm. The document states that Google «secretly steals everything that has ever been created and posted on the Internet by hundreds of millions of Americans.»
