Due to a malfunction in the bank’s mobile application, users received thousands of euros to their accounts

In Ireland, queues formed at ATMs after a local bank allowed users to withdraw amounts exceeding their account balance. This is reported by The Register.

According to The Irish Times and The Irish Independent, many Irish people lined up at ATMs and did not hesitate to withdraw excess cash. The Times also reported that some users suddenly had an «extra» 1,000 euros in their accounts, and ATMs were giving out easy money to people without any problems.

The incident began with disruptions in the financial institution’s operations, which the Bank of Ireland recognized late Tuesday night. «We are aware that customers using our mobile app and 365Online service are currently experiencing difficulties,» the bank wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, when the ATMs ran out of cash, people in some places even started fights and called the police.

The Bank of Ireland responded to the greed of users: «We would like to remind customers that if they transfer/withdraw funds, including in excess of normal limits, this money will be debited from their account. We recognize that customers may not be able to check their balance, but should not withdraw/transfer funds if there is a possibility of exceeding the limit.»

The agency also commented on the situation to the media: «A technical issue affected a number of Bank of Ireland services yesterday. Our teams have restored services overnight and all services are available to customers this morning. We sincerely apologize for the disruption this outage has caused. We know that we fell far below the standards our customers expect from us.»

However, the bank has neither confirmed nor denied reports of «extra» deposits for users in the amount of € 1,000.
