Mastercard: Ukraine is among the top 5 countries in the world by the number of contactless payments using gadgets

According to the results of the second quarter of 2023, Ukraine, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States became the leaders in the number of contactless payments with gadgets. This is reported by Espresso with reference to UNIAN and the direct speech of representatives of the Mastercard payment system.

According to the financial giant, in the second quarter of 2023, the share of payments by smartphones and NFC gadgets among all contactless payments in Ukraine crossed the 60% mark of all digital payments.

«According to the results of the second quarter, Ukraine is in the top five along with Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, and the US,» said Yuriy Batkhin, Vice President of Business Development at Mastercard Ukraine and Moldova.

It is noted that such a rapid development of NFC payments is associated with the growing popularity of digital wallets, which allow turning a smartphone or other gadget into a convenient payment tool. Experts also noted the popularity of contactless payment technology. Ukrainians use it most often when visiting supermarkets, catering establishments, clothing and footwear stores, and gas stations.

Mastercard emphasized that the development of a network of payment terminals that support this type of payment was also an important foundation for the spread of contactless payments. It should be noted that almost 97% of POS terminals in Ukraine currently accept contactless payments.

In early July, Mastercard integrated an artificial intelligence system into its services to detect fraudsters and block criminal transactions. The neural network will allow banks to more effectively identify fraud and prevent money transfers to criminals who fraudulently impersonate the legitimate recipient of a payment — a family member, friend or retailer.
