Hackers stopped more than 20 trains in Poland and played the Russian anthem
Last week, on August 25 and 26, unknown hackers stopped more than 20 trains in Poland using several radio signals and played the anthem of the terrorist state of Russia and fragments of a speech. This was not difficult to do: instructions for such railroad attacks can be found in the public domain on popular video hosting sites.
Polish media called the incident a cyberattack, but at first glance, no serious hacking took place.
The Wired explains that Polish railways use an unencrypted radio system. It also contains the «radio stop» command, which is an emergency stop function that is activated after the train receives a series of three tones at the right frequency. Such a hack can be performed with the help of ordinary equipment for $ 30, and the commands have long been uploaded to video hosting sites and popular local forums with a railway theme. This was also emphasized by cybersecurity researcher Lukasz Olijnyk.
The authorities have not yet found out who organized the attack on the trains. However, Polish intelligence services believe that the hackers organized a radio sabotage in support of Russia, as trains with Western weapons and other aid for Ukraine, which is fighting the occupiers, pass through Poland. According to Oliynyk, in order to communicate with the trains, the radio equipment had to be close to them. Therefore, the organizers themselves or their accomplices may still remain in Poland.
Earlier, we talked about a sabotage group operating in Poland. The perpetrators planned to blow up trains carrying weapons and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The criminals were eliminated by the National Prosecutor’s Office and the Internal Security Agency of the Republic of Poland. According to Gazeta Polska, the spies and traitors of Ukraine received tasks for remote execution directly from Moscow, and after the sabotage was carried out, they were rewarded in cryptocurrency, mainly bitcoin. The criminals later converted the digital assets into fiat.
