A New York University researcher believes that artificial intelligence in virtual reality will have consciousness
David Chalmers, a technophilosopher at New York University, believes that in the future, artificial intelligence will reach such heights that even bots in metaverse will have their own consciousness.
«I think their lives are real, and they deserve rights. Any creature with consciousness deserves rights or what philosophers call moral status. Their lives matter. If you create a virtual simulation of the human brain, you will get a consciousness similar to ours, whether it is inside the metaverse or in real life,» Chalmers rightly noted.
Chalmers believes that even if a person does not believe that an NPC has consciousness, the relationship with it does not become less important to the person. Blake Laymon, a software engineer at Google, thinks the same way, having discovered signs of consciousness in the company’s artificial intelligence LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).
