PlayStation developers refuse to integrate NFT in favor of their own ideas

11:09 am, July 19, 2022

The developers of the PlayStation gaming console, owned by the tech giant Sony Computer Entertainment, have announced the launch of the PlayStation Stars loyalty program, emphasizing the rejection of NFT integration in favor of their own ideas.

As Sony’s vice president of advertising Grace Chen explained, the new program is designed to reward both new and experienced PlayStation players — users will receive digital collectibles that «have nothing to do» with NFT. «Our collectibles are definitely not NFT. You will not be able to sell or buy them. PlayStation Stars does not use any blockchain technology,» Grace Chen emphasized.

However, some members of the crypto community were skeptical about the new program from Sony. For example, Alexander Leonard Larsen, the main co-founder of Play2Earn, the NFT-based Axie Infinity game, said that PlayStation players will not fully own digital collectibles, as they will not provide ownership rights as non-fungible tokens.

Some users are convinced that PlayStation refused to integrate NFTs because of the negative attitude of the gaming community towards non-fungible tokens. Perhaps this is how developers seek to maintain the loyalty of their audience and avoid a wave of hate from gamers. For example, recently, game fans opposed the integration of NFTs into a new Ubisoft game. According to gamers, developers wanted to make extra money using blockchain. Back in March, at the Gaming Developers Conference 2022, representatives of large gaming companies assured that they were not interested in cryptocurrencies.
