The world’s most famous cryptocurrency hackers Lazarus have changed their method of stealing assets
The notorious North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group continues to carry out large-scale cyberattacks on cryptocurrency projects and networks. Experts estimate that the total amount of stolen digital assets exceeds $ 2 billion.
A new investigation conducted by an anonymous ZachXBT analyst reveals details of how Lazarus Group laundered more than $ 200 million in criminally obtained cryptocurrencies.
The attackers used a complex scheme involving numerous mixers, such as Tornado Cash for Ethereum and ChipMixer for Bitcoin. Tools such as decentralized exchanges and swappers were used to help mix digital assets to further conceal their origin. The ZachXBT report covers more than 25 different hacker attacks between August 2020 and October 2023.
In addition, hackers actively used the services of P2P exchanges such as Noones and Paxful, which allow anonymous exchange of assets between users. According to ZachXBT, the group was able to convert $ 44 million into fiat money using such exchanges.
According to experts, the proceeds from cyberattacks can be used by Pyongyang to finance its nuclear program and other military developments. Tightening sanctions are pushing the DPRK to look for non-traditional sources of income.
