EU countries will develop a unique digital infrastructure to implement their own blockchain
At a meeting of telecommunications ministers of the European Council, it was announced that a new organization, the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium, was created to develop and implement a blockchain under the working title Europeum.
The EU’s own blockchain should help EU countries free themselves from technological dependence on similar American services. The new blockchain will allow tracking the origin of food products, protecting intellectual property and confidential data from third parties.
«With the introduction of Europeum, Europe will have a tangible presence in the daily lives of citizens and businesses. It’s hightime we created our own sovereign infrastructure so that we don’t depend on American companies like Amazon Web Services in the technology sector,» explained Mathieu Michel, Belgian Secretary of State for Digitalization.
According to officials of the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium, ten EU member states, including Italy, Poland, and Greece, have agreed to provide financial and technological assistance in the deployment and operation of Europeum.
