Binance customer loses $ 1 million due to account hacking

1:23 pm, June 4, 2024

A Chinese client of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, suffered huge financial losses due to account hacking. The problem arose from a Google plugin called Aggr, promoted by some influencers.

After downloading this plugin, the user lost $ 1 million worth of cryptocurrencies. The hackers used the captured cookies for two-factor authentication (2FA), gaining unauthorized access to the Binance account, explained crypto journalist Colin Wu.

The victim noticed suspicious activity on his account only after an hour and a half, and then contacted Binance support. Later, the user complained that Binance’s response to the request was not fast enough.

It took the exchange more than a day to notify other trading platforms about the freezing of the stolen funds. Therefore, the hacker managed to withdraw all the assets.

Earlier this year, one of the leading blockchain gaming platforms, Gala Games, became a victim of a large-scale hack that is almost unparalleled in the crypto industry. According to the founder of Gala Games, Eric Schirouer, hackers sold 600 million internal coins of the GALA platform worth about 5913 ETH (over $ 22 million). However, the criminal activity did not stop there. The hackers also arbitrarily created 4.4 billion additional GALA coins. The team’s prompt actions allowed us to block the offenders' account and cancel the account in time.
