How hackers stole $ 2 million in cryptocurrency using a dipfake is revealed

2:21 pm, June 6, 2024

A user of the OKX cryptocurrency exchange lost crypto assets worth more than $ 2 million due to a personal data breach. The hackers changed the security settings in his account by impersonating the victim using a dipfake.

The victim, named Lai Fan Chan, shared the details of the incident with crypto journalist Colin Wu. The hackers hacked into Chan’s Telegram account, took possession of his personal data, and gained access to his email through the password recovery function.

The hackers then used a deepfake with Fan Chan’s face generated by artificial intelligence. The fingerprint helped to change the security settings of the OKX account, including the customer’s phone number, email address, and Google identity settings. Within a day, the cybercriminals managed to steal more than $ 2 million from the affected user’s account.

It is not specified what crypto assets were stolen. OKX security confirmed the incident and promised to help Fan Chan recover the stolen assets in cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

Using modern technology, attackers can imitate a person’s voice and face to successfully pass the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure and distribute fake videos of cryptocurrency giveaways.
