Hacker who stole $ 37 million in cryptocurrency reveals his identity

1:17 pm, October 2, 2024

a 21-year-old resident of Indiana, USA, has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $ 37 million worth of cryptocurrencies. Prosecutors accused Evan Light of cyber fraud, during which he hacked into an investment company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and stole personal data and cryptocurrencies from nearly 600 victims.

Light acted with one or more unidentified co-conspirators, laundering the stolen funds through cryptocurrency mixers and gambling sites. He faces up to 20 years in prison on each count, as well as a possible obligation to return the stolen funds.

The suspect is currently in custody awaiting trial.

As a reminder, the Binance cryptocurrency community recently reported a possible data leak of almost 13 million exchange users. An anonymous hacker on a darknet forum claims that the leak included names, email addresses, phone numbers, and home information of users. Earlier, Binance froze all funds belonging to Palestinian users at the request of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The assets will not be returned, and all attempts to appeal have been rejected.

We also mentioned that in the last week of September, hackers gained access to confidential information of 150 million customers of the American financial giant MoneyGram. Notably, no hacker group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
