The US may ban the popular cryptocurrency USDT
The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into Tether, a cryptocurrency company that issues USDT. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to the publication, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan is trying to find out whether USDT was used for illegal activities such as drug trafficking, hacker attacks, terrorist financing, and sanctions circumvention.
If it is confirmed that this cryptocurrency was used by terrorist organizations (including Hamas) or Russian arms dealers, the US Department of Justice may impose sanctions on the company. In this case, American companies will be prohibited from cooperating with Tether.
In response to the WSJ publication, Tether issued an official statement: «The journalists' article about the investigation has nothing to do with reality, and the facts stated in it are based on rumors and dubious sources. It is highly irresponsible for the WSJ to write articles with reckless accusations with such confidence when no authority has officially confirmed the rumors and no sources have been named.»
Tether also emphasized that the WSJ deliberately concealed the facts of the company’s cooperation with law enforcement agencies and blocking of the attackers' wallets. The company called all the assumptions of the article’s authors about helping criminals outrageous.
