The most famous cryptocurrency hackers stole $ 1.34 billion for the development of the DPRK nuclear program

In a joint statement, the United States, Japan, and South Korea warned the blockchain industry about threats from North Korean hackers. Cyberattacks carried out by the Lazarus Group pose a serious threat to the international financial system, as the proceeds of crime are used to finance the DPRK' s nuclear program.

In 2024, North Korean hackers carried out 47 attacks, stealing $ 1.34 billion worth of cryptocurrency, which is 102% more than in 2023. Among the largest attacks were the hacking of the DMM Bitcoin exchange with a loss of $ 308 million and Upbit with a loss of $ 50 million. There were also cyberattacks on WazirX and Radiant Capital.

Hackers are actively using social engineering methods, using malware such as TraderTraitor and AppleJeus. A separate threat is the penetration of North Korean IT specialists into companies under the guise of freelancers, which has forced the authorities of the United States, Japan, and South Korea to urge businesses to carefully vet new employees.

The countries are stepping up cooperation with the private sector: the US has launched the IVAN and Crypto-ISAC data exchange mechanisms, while in Japan, regulators, together with the JVCEA, are auditing companies' cybersecurity. South Korea has additionally imposed sanctions against 15 North Koreans involved in financing the nuclear program through cyberattacks.

Chainalysis analysts note that the methods of hackers from the DPRK are becoming more sophisticated, and the number of attacks with high losses has increased significantly. This suggests that cyber threats related to North Korea require constant monitoring and coordinated action by the international community.
