Hackers have learned to steal cryptocurrency from the Steam gaming platform
Hackers have developed a new scheme for stealing cryptocurrency using games on the Steam platform. According to cybersecurity researchers, the attackers integrate malicious code into specially created games that are distributed via Steam to gamers.
The affected games look no different from regular games, but when launched, the user unnoticed installs the malware on his or her computer. The program searches for cryptocurrency wallets, credentials, and other financial information, and then sends it to the attackers.
The peculiarity of the new attack is that the malware is disguised as gaming software, which makes it difficult for standard antiviruses to detect. According to experts, the first cases of cryptocurrency loss due to such games have already been recorded over the past month.
Experts advise avoiding installing games from unverified sources and carefully checking the developer even in the Steam store. In addition, it is recommended to update antivirus software and not to store cryptocurrency wallets on the main computer used for gaming.
Attacks like this demonstrate that gamers are becoming a new target for cybercriminals, and gaming platforms can be used as a channel for the distribution of malware that threatens the security of digital assets.
