Cryptocurrency owners lost $ 1.6 million in a week due to hacker attacks

Crypto users have lost more than $ 1.6 million in just one week due to a new wave of address poisoning attacks. This was reported by security experts ScamSniffer and Web3 Antivirus.

One of the largest incidents occurred on Friday: a user sent 140 ETH (about $ 636,500) to a false address that he mistakenly copied from his own transaction history. According to ScamSniffer, the history of this wallet was filled with fake addresses, so the attackers only had to wait for the user to make a mistake when copying.

Another user lost $ 880,000 on Sunday, while the others lost $ 80,000 and $ 62,000, respectively. The total amount of money stolen during the week is over $ 1.6 million, which exceeds the March figure of $ 1.2 million.

The essence of address poisoning is to send small transactions from addresses that visually look very similar to the victim’s real wallets. Such addresses are included in the transfer history, and the user can mistakenly copy and use the fraudulent address for an important transaction.

In addition, users lost another $ 600,000 by signing malicious transactions such as approve, increaseAllowance, or permit. For example, on Tuesday, one user lost $ 165,000 worth of BLOCK and DOLO tokens after signing a dangerous request.

Experts emphasize the importance of using a whitelist or a recorded address book, as well as the need to check the recipient’s full address before each transaction, rather than relying on the transfer history.
