Amid the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies in Hong Kong, the number of crimes related to digital assets has increased by 105%.

Wilson Fang Chun-yip, acting senior superintendent of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, said that from January to June, 10,613 cybercrimes were reported in Hong Kong, with a total value of HK$ 1.58 billion ($ 201 million).

This is a 46% increase compared to the same six months last year (7,270 incidents). The number of cryptocurrency fraud cases reached 798, which is 105% more than in the first half of 2021.

According to the police, crypto fraud topped the ranking of fraud cases in Hong Kong in the first half of 2022, outperforming any other online scams. Perhaps this is the other side of technological development, as Hong Kong was named the most adapted to the adoption of cryptocurrencies and the most loyal.
