Cryptocurrency company takes Facebook to court for plagiarizing new logo

12:19 pm, May 3, 2022

Dfinity, a developer of a decentralized network for computing, has filed a lawsuit against Meta (formerly Facebook) for trademark infringement over the infinity sign.

According to the lawsuit filed by Dfinity’s lawyers in the district court, Meta Platforms uses the same mathematical symbol in its logo to express the concept of infinity.

Dfinity’s lawyers pointed out that their company registered the trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in October 2018, while Meta filed an application with the agency only in March 2022. The lawsuit states that Meta and Dfinity are seeking to attract the same audience interested in the latest technology. Both companies use the same marketing channels, so users may be misled by the use of the same symbols by both companies.

Dfinity’s lawyers even trolled Meta: «Unlike Facebook’s centralized system, Dfinity focuses on decentralization and interoperability. Any association of Dfinity with Meta will cause consumers to question Dfinity’s core mission.»

Dfinity is demanding that Meta compensate it for its legal fees and pay it a fine for any confusion.
