A cryptocurrency owner paid a record-breaking fee, which is 45 times higher than the amount of the Ethereum transfer

11:50 am, August 12, 2024

An unknown cryptocurrency owner accidentally spent $ 90,000 in fees for transferring $ 2200 in Ethereum. The user spent 34.26 ETH to transfer 0.87 ETH. The large-scale error was reported by user X under the pseudonym DeFiac, who drew attention to the Etherscan data.

Currently, the price of gas on the Ethereum network is hovering at an annual low of 2 to 4 gwei, which means that an ETH transfer should cost a maximum of $ 5. In percentage terms, the user overpaid by more than 1,783,900%.

So-called «fat finger» transactions are not uncommon in the crypto space. on October 10, 2023, an NFT trader paid a whopping 1,055 ETH — $ 1.6 million at the time — for an NFT that was worth only $ 1,000. Such errors usually occur due to incorrect commission settings, which users can set manually. Automatic commission input often fails to work properly in the case of non-standard transactions or low network activity.

The absence of the possibility to cancel or refund such fees makes such cases especially painful for cryptocurrency owners. Experts recommend carefully checking all transaction parameters before confirming a transaction, especially when setting up fees.
