A large cryptocurrency owner lost more than $ 180,000 due to a hacker attack

1:45 pm, April 24, 2024

A major cryptocurrency investor recently fell victim to a phishing attack on the Ethereum network. The user lost over $ 180,000 in USD Coin (USDC) and ANDY (ANDY) tokens.

According to Etherscan, the attack took place on April 23 and lasted almost an hour. Transaction data confirms that the attackers carried out a phishing attack with multiple challenges, combining everything into one transfer. Numerous calls provoked an outflow of funds from the victim’s address to several wallets belonging to the hackers.

Some of these addresses have already been identified by Etherscan as phishing wallets. In total, the investor lost more than 1.6 billion ANDY tokens worth $ 162,400 and 17,913 USDC. The attack emptied the user’s account, which currently has a balance of $ 32 in Ethereum (ETH) and Arbitrum (ARB). While one of the attacker’s addresses kept the funds, the second, which received all the ANDY tokens, exchanged them for WETH on Uniswap and then transferred the WETH to a new address.

The attack likely exploited the victim’s interaction with smart contracts. Often, attackers create contracts that look like they are performing a standard transaction, but the transaction has built-in calls that approve the transfer of user tokens to the attacker.
