A major cryptocurrency holder lost $ 24 million due to a hacker attack
Cryptocurrency experts monitoring the situation on blockchains have discovered that unknown persons have withdrawn $ 24 million worth of assets from the wallet of a major cryptocurrency owner.
Judging by the features used, the owner of the digital assets received a phishing email. The cryptocurrency owner lost 4,841 derivative tokens for ETH Rocket Pool (rETH) staking worth $ 8.5 million, as well as 9,579 ETH Lido Staked tokens ($ 15.6 million). This case has become one of the largest cryptophishing incidents to date.
«The victim gave the hackers approval to transfer rETH and sETH in two separate transactions. In all likelihood, these transactions were signed after clicking on a phishing link,» said BlockSec crypto analyst Jinyi Guo.
Computer security experts believe that the whale signed a transaction to withdraw funds from his Ethereum wallet using a URL sent in an unknown way. By clicking on the link, the wallet owner transferred the rights to use the transferFrom function to the hacker, who transferred the funds to his address.
Earlier in August, one of the crypto users lost $ 900,000 by following a phishing link. Interestingly, the link appeared directly in Google search results.
As a reminder, according to CertiK, in August of this year, criminals were able to steal cryptocurrency worth about $ 45 million. In general, since the beginning of the year, users have lost $ 997 million in fraudulent schemes.
