Analysts explain why game developers are still skeptical about NFTs

8:34 pm, August 21, 2022

According to a new study by software developer Perforce, the majority of game developers are not convinced that NFTs will matter in the long run. Out of 300 developers surveyed by Perforce, 49% said that NFTs will have either minimal or no impact on games.

Perforce Chief Technology Officer Brad Hart notes that game developers can already implement any NFT-like capabilities without using blockchain technology. «It's like any blockchain project that tries to be relevant just because it’s 'blockchain'. Unless they solve a unique problem in an innovative way, NFTs have minimal real-world utility,» he commented.

According to the anonymous survey, one game developer told Perforce that NFTs continue to look like a «scam.» Another argues that the technology is effectively becoming useless, as a centralized database can already do what NFTs are intended to do: «If Microsoft wants people to buy a Master Chief helmet in Halo and use it in Call of Duty, they only need to link it to the player’s Xbox or Game Pass account. They don’t need to involve the blockchain,» the developer wrote.

As it turned out, game developers are more positive about virtual and augmented reality. 79% of respondents said that AR and VR will be important for games by 2025.
