English Premier League plans to launch its virtual reality and NFT tokens
The English Premier League (EPL) has filed two applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), thus confirming its plans to launch a metaverse.
This was reported by trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis on his Twitter account. The applications for registration of one of the most popular sports leagues in the world include its name and logo «lion's head», as well as the logo «the shape of the main trophy of the English Premier League». The English Premier League is not the first sports brand to launch its own meta-universe.
According to the lawyer, trademark registration is a logical step to protect the brand in today’s economy and in the future economy of the metaverse. It is possible that the football league intends to enter other sectors, such as: NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital collectibles, digital art, virtual shoes and clothing, etc.
It is worth noting that many sports representatives are also planning to enter the NFT and virtual reality space. Ex-footballer Michael Owen released his NFT token collection, but social media was full of criticism due to its pyramid-like scheme. And former boxer Floyd Mayweather once again decided to make money on his fans and also launched a dubious «super project» called Mayweverse (metaverse).
