Apple to release the first ever Apple Watch printed on a 3D printer

1:26 pm, August 31, 2023

Apple developers are experimenting with using a 3D printer to produce cases for their Apple Watch smartwatch. Anonymous informants told Bloomberg about this. According to them, this technology can greatly change the production processes of the company’s gadgets.

The tests are conducted with stainless steel watch cases. According to standard technology, the desired shape of the case is cut out of a piece of metal. the 3D printer creates a model from a special powder, which under high temperature and pressure turns into a substance that feels like ordinary steel. The new method is more environmentally friendly: production time is reduced and less material is used, the agency’s sources explained.

Apple and its suppliers have been developing the technology for several years. In recent months, Apple has been experimenting with cases for the new, ninth generation of its Apple Watch smartwatch. The company is expected to unveil it on September 12. If the test with the Apple Watch and 3D printer goes as planned, Apple will consider expanding it to other products in the next few years.

The use of 3D printing can simplify the production process and subsequently reduce overall costs: already now, the cost of watch cases produced in a new way corresponds to the cost of those produced in the usual way. So far, 3D printing can only be applied to products with small production volumes: most Apple watches are made of aluminum, while steel accounts for only 10% of all products.

In February this year, Apple patented a technology that will allow adding a video camera to the Apple Watch. The camera sensors will be placed on the body of the device, which is attached to the strap with special latches or magnets. According to the patent information, users will be able to quickly remove the front panel of the watch to access the built-in camera. When the user is done, the panel will snap back into place and lock into place.
