Australians will be able to buy gasoline and donuts with cryptocurrency

10:09 am, August 19, 2022

Australian drivers no longer need to look for cash or a card to pay for gasoline and the nation’s favorite Krispy Kreme donuts sold at OTR (On The Run) gas stations. Now more than 150 service stations will accept cryptocurrency payments. This became possible thanks to the partnership of OTR gas stations with the cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com and payment terminal provider DataMesh.

The service stations will allow Crypto.com users to scan a QR code on a DataMesh payment terminal, which will link to their exchange wallet. Once the user selects the type of cryptocurrency they want to use, the payment will be instantly transferred to the merchant in Australian dollars. Currently, the option is only available in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, but Peregrine Corp., the owner of OTR gas stations, plans to roll out the feature to 250 more locations nationwide.

«OTR's history is about giving customers the ability to choose how to make their lives easier. Thedecision to offer cryptocurrency payments is centered around that,» said Peregrine Executive Chairman Yaser Shahin.

According to research firm Roy Morgan, as of mid-2022, more than 1 million Australians own at least one type of cryptocurrency with an average value of $ 20,000. In another study by the company, almost a third of Australian businesses expressed their readiness to conduct cryptocurrency transactions by the end of this year or early 2023.
