Richard Teng
Richard Teng is the new CEO of the largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Teng is a recognised expert in financial services and regulation with over 30 years of experience.
Teng was born in 1971 in Singapore. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Nanyang Technological University and a master’s degree in applied finance from the University of Western Sydney. Teng has also completed an executive education programme at the Wharton School of Business.
Prior to joining Binance, Teng held several senior positions in the financial sector. He was the Director General of the Financial Services Regulatory Authority at the Abu Dhabi International Financial Centre (ADGM), where he actively promoted regulatory innovation. Teng has also worked at the Singapore Exchange as Director of Regulation and spent 13 years at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, where he was involved in corporate finance and was involved in the regulation of the banking, insurance and securities sectors.
In August 2021, Teng joined the Binance team as the General Manager of Binance Singapore. He later became Binance’s head of MENA, then Europe, and eventually all regions outside the US. In these roles, he led local teams focusing on strategic partnerships, innovation, and expanding the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
In November 2023, following a settlement with the US Department of Justice, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down as CEO and Teng took over. His peers praise Teng’s professional skills, especially in the areas of regulation and government relations. Teng is known as an attentive, empathetic, and charismatic leader with a deep understanding of the operations in the markets he oversees.
Teng is married and has two children who, as of 2018, were living in Singapore. His wife ran a local family office and his children were studying in educational institutions. There is no information on his financial status.
In his new position at Binance, Teng plans to focus on working with regulators to maintain high standards that promote innovation and consumer protection, as well as continue to work with the company’s partners to drive growth and adoption of Web3.
