Gemini Exchange warns its customers about possible phishing attacks

3:12 pm, December 15, 2022

Representatives of the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange have warned their customers about possible phishing attacks aimed at stealing cryptocurrency assets. As it became known, hackers gained access to personal information about 5.7 million users.

The attackers managed to steal Gemini customers' email addresses and phone numbers. The exchange officials emphasized that users' accounts and funds remain safe, but investors should be as cautious as possible and not open suspicious emails.

Gemini urged users to create new email addresses and re-link their accounts to them. It is advised to do this only through a browser on a PC. «We also strongly recommend using two-factor authentication (2FA) and/or hardware security keys to protect your Gemini account,» the exchange representatives emphasized.

Like most cryptocurrency platforms, Gemini is going through a rough patch after the FTX bankruptcy. At the end of November, the company warned its customers about possible delays in withdrawing funds from the Earn project due to the suspension of the Genesis lending platform.

Problems with withdrawals and servicing current obligations of Genesis arose immediately after the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. According to the company, Gemini’s lending partner under the Earn Genesis Global Capital program has suspended withdrawals and is unable to fulfill its obligations to customers.

It is worth noting that Genesis' derivatives division has lost access to about $ 175 million in blocked funds on its FTX trading account. The panic caused by the sharp drop in the FTX exchange provoked a massive request among Genesis clients to withdraw their assets.
