Bitcoin exchange CoinDCX lost $ 44 million due to a hacker attack

2:05 pm, July 21, 2025

on July 18, the Indian centralized crypto exchange CoinDCX suffered a large-scale hack that resulted in the withdrawal of assets worth about $ 44.2 million. This was reported by ZachXBT analyst, noting that the exchange team did not publicly comment on the incident for about 17 hours. Only then did CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta confirm the attack in response to a post on Telegram.

According to Gupta, the hacker carried out a sophisticated attack on the server, compromising the internal operating account, which was used exclusively to provide liquidity on the partner exchange. The wallets containing customer funds remained untouched and safe.

The CoinDCX team quickly isolated the incident, which was limited to just one account. All losses of the platform will be covered by the exchange’s reserves, and the service — trading, deposits and withdrawals — has not been affected and continues to operate as usual.

Cybersecurity experts are investigating the hack. CoinDCX and its partner exchange are also tracking the movement of the stolen assets in an effort to block and recover them.

Interestingly, the attack on CoinDCX took place exactly a year after the high-profile hack of another Indian exchange WazirX for $ 235 million. In 2025, the total losses of crypto projects from hacker attacks in six months have already exceeded $ 2.1 billion.
