BTC whale moves $ 66 million worth of bitcoins after 10 years of inactivity

12:38 pm, May 13, 2024

The cryptocurrency whale has woken up, moving 1000 BTC from its wallets for the first time in 10.7 years. According to the Lookonchain analytical platform, the bitcoins were transferred to these addresses on September 12 and 13, 2013.

According to the online data, the bitcoins transferred by the whale belong to the so-called «ancient stock». This is how analysts refer to coins purchased at least 7 years ago. Lookonchain analysts noted that the wallet 1DUJuHGVT4sa1VMGjfF9YdFnFAEw6NgfC5 received 500 BTC on September 12, 2013, and 16vRqAJ1wfuFBkVMabKnZHLkeN3uwqjzEa accepted the same amount of coins the next day. This suggests that the addresses may belong to the same owner.

At the time of writing, bitcoin is trading at $ 61,600. This means that the value of the coins purchased in 2013 at a price of $ 124 has increased to a whopping $ 61.1 million.

Over the past few months, many dormant cryptocurrency wallets have been spotted, waking up after 10−14 years of inactivity. They contained both previously mined/purchased BTC coins and Ethereum coins obtained during the ICO in 2014.

Typically, many holders decide to start selling their tokens in an effort to capitalize on the spike in BTC or ETH prices. However, in many cases, users also manage to recover their long-lost private keys only now.

As a reminder, in January, cryptocurrency exchanges made record-breaking transactions with bitcoin worth almost $ 2 billion in just 5 minutes. One after another, transfers were made for 10,486 BTC ($ 450.33 million), 9,445 BTC ($ 405.63 million), 11,115 BTC ($ 477.58 million), and 8,859 BTC ($ 380.65 million). Numerous traders have suggested that all transactions were made by a single owner who keeps his digital assets at several addresses.
