CertiK: hackers stole $ 2.47 billion in cryptocurrency in the first 6 months of 2025
In the first half of 2025, the total losses from hacker attacks, exploits, and fraudulent schemes on the crypto market reached $ 2.47 billion, according to a report by CertiK. However, in the second quarter, the number of incidents decreased: 144 cases totaling more than $ 800 million were recorded during this period, which is 52% less than in the previous quarter.
Only two major hacks accounted for the largest share of losses: the Bybit exchange (which lost $ 1.5 billion in airtime) and the Cetus decentralized protocol on the Sui blockchain ($ 225 million in losses). According to CertiK, without these two events, the total losses for the year would have amounted to $ 690 million, which indicates the absence of a systemic deterioration in security.
The growth of phishing attacks is also noted: their number reached 132 cases, and losses exceeded $ 410 million. At the same time, wallet compromise remained the most massive source of losses — more than $ 1.7 billion in 34 incidents. The Ethereum blockchain has become the most attractive target: 70 hacks and fraudulent schemes since the beginning of the year.
CertiK analysts emphasize that amid the growing number of new users and capital inflows to the industry, ensuring high security standards is becoming an increasingly important task. This is also influenced by recent legislative changes in the United States and Hong Kong, which form a more mature regulatory environment for the crypto market.
