Hacker attack on Neopets game puts 69 million user accounts at risk
Representatives of the Neopets game announced a hacker attack on the platform — 69 million user accounts are currently under threat.
As it became known, Neopets, a service for the care and breeding of virtual pets, has already launched an investigation into the cyberattack and involved law enforcement agencies. The developers promised to strengthen the protection of the system and user data. However, it is not yet known what will happen to gamers' accounts — Neopets representatives advised to change passwords and not to click on suspicious links that may be sent to users by email.
At the time of writing, Neopets representatives did not comment on the extent of the hack and the timeline for returning the game to normal operation. There is also no information about the hacker or group of hackers who carried out the attack, but users have reported that a person under the pseudonym TarTarX has posted an ad on the Internet offering to sell the source code and the Neopets database. TarTarX is ready to sell the entire set of information for 4 BTC.
Neopets is not the only game that has suffered from hacker attacks. Recently, hackers managed to steal $ 625 million from one of the largest games of the Play2Earn genre — Axie Infinity. The North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group is suspected of the theft, which attacked the Ronin sidechain back in March. Sky Mavis Inc. suffered losses of 173,600 ETH and $ 25.5 million — 1/3 of the stolen assets belonged to the company, but more than 100,000 ETH were gaming assets.
