China tests the world’s most powerful drone
China has begun testing the Changying-8 (CY-8) cargo drone, which the developers position as the heaviest in its class in the world. The device combines a significant payload with the ability to take off from short runways of about 500 meters.
The first test flight lasted 30 minutes. According to the Chinese state television channel CCTV, the tests tested key onboard systems such as avionics, power plants, and an intelligent flight control system. The drone needed only 280 meters of runway to accelerate.
The technical characteristics of the CY-8 are quite impressive:
- Length: 17 meters
- Wingspan: 25 meters
- Unladen weight: 3.5 tons
- Payload capacity: 3.5 tons
- Cargo compartment volume: 18 cubic meters
The drone is equipped with two turboprop engines that enable short takeoffs and landings. The CY-8 is expected to be used both in military missions — particularly for reconnaissance — and in civilian tasks such as emergency communications, weather monitoring, logistics, and disaster relief.
