Cryptocurrency analysts tell about the largest hacks of crypto platforms for more than $ 1 billion
According to analysts, 2023 was marked by a series of large-scale cyberattacks on the cryptocurrency industry, as a result of which hackers stole more than $ 1 billion. Attackers became especially active at the end of the year, amid the market’s recovery after the fall of 2022. The largest hacks affected large decentralized financial protocols and crypto exchanges.
- Mixin: the largest hack of the year in the amount of $ 200 million. In September 2023, the Mixin platform lost $ 200 million due to a hack of their cloud service. The stolen funds have not been returned, although the company promised to reimburse users for half of the losses.
- Euler Finance: $ 197 million hack and unexpected refund. Euler Finance lost almost $ 200 million in March. The uniqueness of this case is that a few weeks after the hack, almost half of the stolen funds were returned to the platform.
- Poloniex: theft of over $ 100 million in November. The owner of the crypto exchange, Justin Sun, promised full compensation for the losses and even offered the hackers $ 10 million for the return of funds.
- MultiChain: $ 125 million rug pull. In July, MultiChain reported a suspicious withdrawal of $ 125 million, which led to the arrest of their CEO in China and the subsequent closure of the project.
- Atomic Wallet: $ 35 million hack. In June, an attack on the Atomic Wallet cryptocurrency wallet resulted in the loss of $ 35 million, and researchers identified the Lazarus group from North Korea as being involved.
- CoinEx: theft of $ 70 million. In September, the CoinEx crypto exchange lost funds, probably due to the actions of the Lazarus group.
- KyberSwap: $ 47 million hack. On November 23, representatives of the decentralized exchange KyberSwap reported a hack of the Elastic Pools liquidity pool, which resulted in the hacker’s withdrawal of about $ 47 million.
The Lazarus hacker group from North Korea remains one of the key players in cryptocurrency hacking, responsible for thefts of more than $ 300 million in 2023.
