Cryptocurrency fraudsters have created 35 Elon Musk’s digital assets to steal digital assets
During the latest launch of the SpaceX Starship rocket, YouTube was once again flooded with fake streams featuring Elon Musk. Cryptocurrency fraudsters tried to deceive spaceflight fans who were watching the event. Cybersecurity researchers from Avast Threat Labs reported that more than 35 YouTube channels broadcast Musk’s artificially created voice, promising to return double the amount of cryptocurrency to those who send money to the specified address.
The fraudulent streams coincided with the fourth test launch of the giant reusable SpaceX Starship rocket. The real stream showed how the rocket successfully re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere and landed in the Indian Ocean.
Cointelegraph found that one of the channels was masquerading as the official SpaceX account, broadcasting three simultaneous streams with a fake Elon Musk, which gathered 170,000 viewers, probably bots. Musk’s artificial voice asked viewers to send BTC $75,985.54 Bitcoin 1.55% Market capitalization $1.5 trillion VOL. 24 hours $3.14 billion or ETH $2,916.38 Bridged Ether (StarkGate) 3.74% Market capitalization $0.24 billion VOL. 24 hours $1.68 billion to the specified address, promising to return double the amount. This voice successfully copied Musk’s speech style, including delays and pauses, and assured: «This is not a fake, this is a real prank. I personally guarantee it.»
It is unknown how many viewers have fallen victim to these scams. Cointelegraph has identified nine cryptocurrency wallets linked to three separate scammers, with a total amount of about $ 34,000 in them. The last transactions were recorded on June 6. The streams have already been deleted, and the channel is now imitating the Cardano Foundation account, continuing the fraud with a fake stream with Чарльз Хоскінсон" href="https://noworries.news/biography/charlz-hoskinson/" data-bio-id="10 311">Charles Hoskinson, the co-founder of Cardano.
Elon Musk is often targeted by cryptocurrency scams, as he has long been a supporter of cryptocurrencies, especially Dogecoin. In April, security researchers discovered similar fake SpaceX accounts on YouTube that used Musk’s artificially created voice to spread the same fraudulent schemes.
