Cryptocurrency hackers who stole more than $ 235 million from a well-known exchange transferred funds to Tornado Cash

2:38 pm, September 4, 2024

The hackers involved in the hack of the WazirX crypto exchange transferred part of the stolen funds through the anonymous Tornado Cash service. According to the latest data, the transfer amounted to more than $ 6.5 million.

The WazirX exchange was hacked on July 18, resulting in the theft of over $ 235 million in various cryptocurrencies. The hacker left part of the funds on various wallets, but gradually began to transfer a significant portion through decentralized services. Tornado Cash is one of these services that allows anonymizing transactions. Because of this, it is often used by hackers to hide the traces of their crimes.

The use of Tornado Cash complicates attempts to trace funds. Security experts have repeatedly noted that this service allows mixing transactions from different users, which makes it much more difficult to identify the source of funds. So far, it is known that the hackers transferred funds in several stages, breaking large amounts into smaller ones to avoid the attention of law enforcement agencies.

The investigation is ongoing, and cybersecurity experts are trying to track down other transactions related to the criminal. Despite the active efforts of law enforcement and international organizations, the recovery of the stolen funds is still in question. The cryptocurrency community is concerned that hackers are increasingly using such services to launder digital assets.

In July, the WazirX hack again raised the question of the reliability of centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and the need to strengthen measures to protect users' funds. Cryptography and cybersecurity experts have already begun discussing possible ways to improve security systems and prevent similar attacks in the future. It is known that blockchain security researcher ZachXBT has suggested that the Lazarus Group hacker group is behind themulti-billion dollar digital token laundering.
