Cryptocurrency owner sends 4.5 million USDT to hacker as a result of phishing attack
An unknown user has fallen victim to a phishing attack, sending USD 4.46 million to the fraudster. This was reported today, September 21, by PeckShield analysts on the X platform.
According to Etherscan, the victim 0×2175c0082d052872501f7fe54e1aC59858aaf7D9 sent the funds to the attacker, who immediately withdrew them from the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange. The hacker exchanged USDT for DAI and withdrew the stolen assets to four other addresses.
The Scam Sniffer project team stated that the user was likely to have become a victim of phishing. According to experts, the transfer request came from the fake Coinone exchange.
According to a report by the Dune platform, this case involved a scheme with a malicious USDT smart contract. According to Scam Sniffer, it was first used in 2021. Since then, the damage caused by this exploit alone has exceeded $ 337 million.
As a reminder, on September 20, it became known that Ukrainian cyber police exposed hackers who created phishing bots on Telegram under the guise of bots from the energy company DTEK during blackouts. After collecting the necessary user data, the attackers made unauthorized access to the victims' accounts. From the hacked user accounts, the hackers automatically sent out fraudulent advertisements to misappropriate Ukrainians' money.
