The attackers used the Inferno Drainer tool, known as «fraud as a service,» to carry out the malicious attack. The software creates fake versions of popular decentralized applications (DeFi) that force users to sign transactions, giving fraudsters control over their wallets. It is noteworthy that since its inception, the Infinite Drainer has stolen more than $ 215 million from more than 200,000 victims.
The attack targeted assets related to the Spark DeFi protocol and resulted in the theft of 12,083 wrapped ether (spWETH) tokens worth about $ 32.4 million. Although Inferno Drainer was shut down in 2023, it reappeared in 2024 with improved features and support for more than 28 blockchains.
