Cybercriminals send spam messages to Ukrainians urging them to surrender their positions

12:24 pm, October 29, 2023

On October 26, Ukrainians began receiving provocative messages on their smartphones, offering citizens to share information about the Armed Forces for money. It is known that customers of all three major Ukrainian mobile operators — Kyivstar, Lifecell and Vodafone — received the message.

«We change information about the Armed Forces for $,» reads the text message sent by a user with the nickname Krayina. At the end, a link to the Telegram channel is attached. It is unknown where the «offers» are sent from and who the «customer» is.

Anatoliy Sydorenko, the commander of the 97th Brigade of the 60th Brigade, noted in his Telegram channel that he had also received such a message. He warned Ukrainians that this is another provocation by the Russian occupiers and they should not fall for it.

«A massive SMS mailing has hit subscribers in Ukraine. The enemy is trying to deceive the information and conduct IPSO by bribery. Be careful and do not fall for provocations,» Sydorenko wrote.

In turn, Kyivstar mobile operator sent an explanation of what is happening to its users.

«The messages were sent via the Internet, their source is abroad. Kyivstar specialists promptly blocked the distribution channel. The SBU and Cyberpolice were informed about the attackers' actions,» the statement said.

The Center for Strategic Communications noted that users from Odesa, Donetsk, and Kharkiv regions receive such messages most often. Citizens are urged to remain conscious and not to fall for enemy provocations. And in any case, do not click on the link provided in the message.

«We urge Ukrainians not to respond to enemy proposals in any way, ignore the occupier! We remind you that the transfer of information about the Armed Forces, critical infrastructure and any other cooperation with the enemy will result in criminal liability. In addition, it can greatly harm the defenders of Ukraine,» the message says.

Earlier, we talked about a hacker scheme using the Ukrposhta brand. On behalf of Ukrposhta, the attackers send SMS messages to customers informing them that the parcel will not be delivered to the addressee unless the person provides their personal data.
