Donald Trump promised to fire the founder of the scandalous Silk Road darknet marketplace
Politico informs: Donald Trump has promised for the second time to release Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road darknet platform, who has been in prison since 2013. Ulbricht was arrested on drug trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime charges and received two life sentences plus 40 years.
In his recent statement on the X platform, Ulbricht noted that he has started his 12th year in prison and is trying to use this time to his advantage. Interestingly, part of the crypto community continues to support Ulbricht, believing that he deserves to be free.
In May 2024, Trump already stated that he would fire Ulbricht if he won the presidential election.
As a reminder, since 2022, the US Department of Justice has announced the seizure of more than 50,000 bitcoins and the arrest of James Zhong, who confessed to fraud related to manipulation of the Silk Road transaction system in 2012. The last confirmed sale of Silk Road assets by the US government took place in March 2023, when 9,861 bitcoins were sold for $ 216 million. According to Arkham, wallets linked to the US government currently contain $ 12 billion in bitcoin, as well as smaller amounts of other confiscated cryptocurrencies.
