Ubisoft CEO apologizes for the company’s attempt to integrate NFT tokens without players' permission

4:41 pm, September 13, 2022

Yves Guillemot, CEO of the French gaming giant Ubisoft, said in a recent interview that the company is conducting research on how NFTs can be used in games and whether they are useful for gamers at all.

«We're working a lot on cloud technologies, working with the next generation of voxels, and looking at the potential of Web3. It is because of the desire to understand Web3 that our team is testing some games to see if they really meet the needs of players. I would say that we are still in the research mode on this issue,» explained Ubisoft CEO.

In early December 2021, Ubisoft launched the beta version of Quartz, its own NFT platform for buying game artifacts. The company expected a negative reaction from users, noting that the concept of NFT may not be immediately clear to players. By the way, this is exactly what happened — the hate from players was maximum, which is why Ubisoft urged Tom Clancy Ghost Recon fans to calm down and said that they would think again about the integration of NFT.

In a recent interview, reflecting on Ubisoft’s NFT rollout, Guillemot admits that the company did not communicate the launch of the controversial platform effectively enough: «We probably failed to communicate that we were doing research. We should have said that we are working on it and will officially launch the project when it will bring real benefits to players.»

The Ubisoft CEO was also asked about the impact of blockchain technology on the environment, as it is often a concern for gamers. Guillemot noted that although he is «very cautious» about the impact of Web3 on the environment, he is optimistic that the problems will be solved over time.

Back in July, the Minecraft development team announced that it would not integrate blockchain technologies into the game and would not launch NFTs. This is because of the lack of confidence in the potential of NFTs in games.
