Cybersecurity experts expose phishing accounts of cryptocurrency projects on the X platform

11:35 am, August 29, 2023

ZachXBT’s online analyst discovered phishing accounts on X (formerly Twitter) that seemed to have managed to pass verification. The fake profiles were disguised as pages of real cryptocurrency projects: Peer to Peer, Lido, ParaSwap, FriendTech, and Synthetix.

«Phishing spam from fake organizations on X is out of control. The service should check the verification of these accounts,» ZachXBT said.

In the last 48 hours alone, the expert has detected 12 cases of fraud using fake accounts on the social network. All of them spread false information about free airdrops.

As a reminder, in August, analyst Nima Ovji suggested that X was working on introducing an additional security layer. He showed a screenshot with a detailed description of a feature that requires users to upload an ID and take a selfie to pass verification.

It is noted that Au10tix will be X’s partner in identity verification. The personal information submitted for verification will be available to both Au10tix and X analysts. At the same time, the social network will store the image of the ID, including biometric data, for up to 30 days and use it «for security purposes.»

It is not yet known whether passport identification will be mandatory and what advantages verified profiles will have. However, it seems that Elon Musk’s social network will soon launch a new way to verify your profile. It is worth noting that currently, users can only use paid verification in the X Premium subscription, formerly known as Twitter Blue.
