Elon Musk authorized the spread of fakes on X-Twitter about Hamas' attack on Israel
The EU has issued a warning to Elon Musk over alleged disinformation about Hamas' attack on Israel, including fake news and «recycled old images» on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The Guardian writes about it.
The letter came less than two months after new laws regulating social media content came into force in the EU under the Digital Services Act. As a reminder, if Musk, the owner of X, fails to comply, he faces a fine of 6% of the profits the billionaire makes from X or a complete shutdown of the social network in the EU.
Thierry Breton, the commissioner in charge of the law, called on Musk to «ensure a quick, accurate and complete response» to the request to contact Europol within the next 24 hours.
The European Commission official reminded Musk that he must take «proportionate and effective measures to address the risks to public safety and civil discourse arising from disinformation». Breton wrote:
«Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to spread illegal content and disinformation in the EU. State media and civil society organizations have widely reported instances of fake and manipulative images and facts circulating on your platform in the EU, such as recycled old images unrelated to armed conflicts or military footage that actually comes from video games. This is clearly false or misleading information.»
Earlier, the EU recognized that the X-Twitter platform contributed to the spread of Russian propaganda. According to a study published in September by the European Commission, the governing body of the European Union, Elon Musk’s X played an important role in ensuring that the occupiers' disinformation and fake narratives about Ukraine influenced a much larger number of people than before the war.
As a reminder, it has recently become known that Elon Musk promotes anti-Semitic channels that support the Kremlin on X-Twitter. The billionaire published a post on his profile calling for people to subscribe to the openly pro-Russian accounts WarMonitor and OSINTdefender to «track the war in real time.»
We would like to add that according to CNN, Elon Musk deliberately disconnected Starlink for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and disrupted the drone attack on the Russian fleet. This is stated in an excerpt from a new biography of the eccentric billionaire titled Elon Musk, adapted by Walter Isaacson.
