FBI warns about the growth of cryptocurrency stealing apps — more than $ 42 million has already been lost

10:47 am, July 19, 2022

Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have published information on the growing number of cryptocurrency stealing apps and advised users to be more careful with suspicious programs — thanks to fake apps, cybercriminals managed to steal at least $ 42 million in a year.

According to the FBI, using fake programs that look like real crypto applications (logo, identification information), hackers have already deceived 244 users and received their funds. For example, fake apps like YiBit and Supayos have helped fraudsters to get more than $ 7 million. And one user lost $ 600,000 in bitcoins due to a program that copied the Trezor mobile app.

In addition to stealing funds through fake apps, cyberattacks are also popular among hackers. In just 3 months of 2022, hackers managed to steal $ 670 million in cryptocurrency through attacks on crypto platforms. This is how they were recently hacked: The Beanstalk DeFi protocol (for $ 182 million), the Horizon bridge of the Harmony network (for $ 100 million), Mirror Protocol (for $ 90 million), and Fei Protocol (for $ 80 million).
