Gamers oppose NFT integration into Ubisoft’s new game
Gamers are hating on the developers of Tom Clancy Ghost Recon under its teaser on YouTube. Gamers were outraged by the integration of NFT into the new Ubisoft game. According to fans, the developers wanted to make extra money using blockchain. Back at the Gaming Developers Conference 2022 held in March, representatives of large gaming companies assured that they were not interested in cryptocurrencies.
Before crypto gaming became popular, many well-known video games (such as Counter Strike or Dota) allowed purchasing skins for real money. However, such purchases were often unjustified, as users did not receive significant advantages in the speed or strength of weapons. In P2E games, on the other hand, financial investments can accelerate progress, so it is not surprising that the community of gamers feels unspoken injustice. Players do not mind paid options if they bring purely aesthetic pleasure, but they are unhappy that significant gameplay advantages can be purchased for cryptocurrency.
The rhetoric of opponents of crypto games is very similar to the discussion around the status of cryptocurrencies. It is worth noting that the South Korean government recently called for the removal of P2E games from the Apple App Store and Google Play. The creators of Minecraft even created a petition against NFTs, which, however, collected only 72 signatures worldwide.
On the other hand, EA games CEO Andrew Wilson is positive about the prospects of P2E games, calling them «the future of the gaming industry.»
